STORYLINE:

Hezbollah rockets continued to hit towns in northern Israel causing casualties and damage to property on Sunday afternoon.

More than 15 rockets pounded Haifa on the eve of a scheduled ceasefire, seriously wounding two people, police said.

One of the rockets set fire to a group of parked cars and the blaze quickly spread as firemen fought to control the flames.

Haifa has been one of Hezbollah's prime targets since the fighting started July 12.

The cease-fire was set to go into effect Monday morning, but after a month of being bombarded by Hezbollah rockets from Lebanon, people in Haifa have no confidence that peace will hold.

Tension in the city was palpable - with residents running into bomb shelters as air raid sirens sounded.

One woman was seriously injured and several others taken to hospital suffering from shock when four katyusha rockets landed in Kiryat Yam, an industrial town north of Haifa.

People who had come out to look at the damage from the first salvo raced back to shelters when the sirens sounded again.

The number of Hezbollah rockets to hit northern Israel since fighting began more than a month ago surpassed 4,000 on Sunday, Israel Radio said.

The army said it could not confirm the report, but police said more than 200 Hezbollah rockets fell on Israel on Sunday alone.

Shmuel Siso, the mayor of Kiryat Yam, said three people were injured by Hezbollah rockets and a lot of damage was caused, but no one was killed.

One of the buildings hit in Kiryat Yam was a school. Siso said it was the third school to be hit by a rocket since the start of the hostilities.
