Located in the county of East Sussex, and around seven miles north of Eastbourne, is the town of Hailsham.

The name 'Hailsham' derives from Old English meaning 'Haegel's homestead', where Haegel was the name of a Saxon settler. In 1252 a market charter was granted by Henry III.

From around 1425 to 1450, St Mary's Church was built, with some rebuilding work taking place in the 1870s. Today it is known, simply, as Hailsham Parish Church, and stands in the heart of the town.

By the 16th century, Hailsham had become a major centre for leather tanning. Another industry would emerge later on when, in 1807, Thomas Burfield established a factory in Hailsham which produced rope and twine, tarpaulin, corn and coal sacks and rick cloths.

In 1849 a railway station opened in Hailsham. It was situated on a branch line to and from Polegate, which in turn links up with Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings, among other locations. Hailsham station closed in 1968 as part of the Beeching cuts, which saw over 2,000 stations closed in a controversial move to promote motorway travel. Today, public transport to Hailsham consists primarily of a direct bus service from Eastbourne.
