Summary
This video delves deep into the history of the Chikuhi and Karatsu lines in Japan, focusing in particular on how the two lines were separated and their relationship to the never-opened Yobuko line.

The Chikuhi line was originally built on a detour with many switchbacks, due to a lack of technology to build a bridge over the mouth of the Matsuura River. Technology later led to a more direct route.
Around the time that the line was rerouted near Fukuoka to connect with the Fukuoka City Subway, the Chikuhi line was split into two, between Meinohama and Karatsu, and between Yamamoto and Imari.
Part of the new Chikuhi line uses facilities built for the Yobuko line, which was to have connected Karatsu and Yobuko. Construction of the Yobuko line was cancelled midway, and traces of it remain even outside the area that was converted to the Chikuhi line.

Yamamoto station was once an important hub where three lines intersected: the Chikuhi line, the Karatsu line, and a branch line.
