Crashed LAAT GUNSHIP Diorama Scenery ~ Star Wars Legion

I’ve been looking at 3D printing for a long time but something has always held me back, but maybe it’s finally good enough. It’s time to crash a LAAT Gunship.

My recent foray into 3d printing with Danny’s stunning dragon model has absolutely sold me on resin printing for minis, but for the scale of builds I’m often working on it’s still a very expensive option for terrain, so today we’ve got a little project using the other main class of 3D printer, FDM. This style of machine builds prints in layers of extruded plastic, which means that it works in an incredibly cheap material, but has always had the MAJOR drawback of leaving a surface texture of little layer lines. These have always been a huge turn off for me, but today I’m going to be working with some prints from a super accessible FDM printer, applying a bit of finishing techniques and seeing if 3D printing is finally good enough at the market entry level.

Those of you who have seen the second installment of out Star Wars Legion Geonosis campaign will be familiar with the crashed LAAT Gunship centrepiece that dominated the landscape. This is the perfect piece for our case study as it is supposed to look similar to the quality of the minis taking cover within it’s flaming carcass.
