I don’t like to use the terms high functioning autism and low functioning autism. However, I do get many parents and professionals asking whether the Verbal Behavior Approach is a good option for a child who is at a high functioning level academically. I’ve spent the last two decades programming for early and intermediate learners. Some of these kids that are labeled high functioning are intermediate learners that need a lot of help. It’s just that people don’t normally know how to help, and support for high functioning autism isn’t as accessible.

In general, I encourage you to really look at the intraverbals, the ability to answer questions, as one of the pivotal things you can do to assess treating high functional autism.
