World Mental Health Day conference: An EU comprehensive approach that prioritises sound mental health for all

The European Commission commemorated World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2023, with a half-day, high-level conference in Brussels, Belgium.

Hosted by Stella Kyriakides, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, the event highlighted the importance of good #mentalhealth.

The conference united hundreds of representatives from EU institutions, national governments, international organisations, and interested partners to raise awareness about the new approach, hear from experts and individuals with lived experiences, and exchange on good practices: mental health across all policies; promotion and prevention; equal access for all.

Mental Health Europe's member Rozina Spinnoy shared a moving family testimony, highlighting the importance of empathetic, co-created, and human rights based approaches for sustainable mental health care.

Rozina Spinnoy: “If we are to leave no one behind, human rights should be at the core of mental health. We must consider more holistic, empathetic and co-created approaches (practices, procedures, policy). There's no sustainability without care.”

She added, “There is no health without mental health. We all have a role to play, every single one of us, in making sure that mental health is given priority.”
