One of the oldest and most enduring questions of philosophy is the so-called problem of the one and the many. Going back to at least Heraclitus and Parmenides, philosophers have sought to determine whether reality is ultimately one or many. The doctrine of the Trinity helps us understand that either answer is reductionistic on its own. God himself is ultimate, and he is ultimately one and three.
