Making money as a freelancer is difficult. Even talking about money with your clients can be uncomfortable. And knowing how much you should charge for your services is equally confusing. Well, I'm here to help! We're going to go over 8 important money making lessons. Most of which I learned the hard way while working as a freelance web designer and developer for the past few years.

A huge part of being able to earn more money, online or otherwise, is having the confidence to actually talk about it. You need to be able to lead the conversation with your client and be firm regarding your prices. All of this is, of course, easier said than done. But the more you talk about money, the more confident you're going to become, which will lead to you believing in your own prices and your own worth. And at that point, everything becomes easier. On top of that, your clients will sense that confidence, which means they'll be more likely to hire you as well.

Once you and your client are done talking about how much they're going to pay you, it's time to put it in writing. Never work without having an agreement in place. A contract, a proposal, an email. Whatever it is, your client needs to agree, in writing, to how much money they're going to pay you, what exactly you're going to do for them and how much time it will take for you to do so. Believe me, having to go back and forth with your client because they're changing what you agreed upon isn't fun, so make sure you're both on the same page (literally - write it down) before you begin working.

Also, make sure you always get paid a certain amount up front. I like to get paid 50% of the final amount before I begin working on the project and 50% after the project is completed. This has a lot of benefits and, really, zero downsides. Your client is likely going to be more responsive, project files and content are going to be easier to come by and they'll be much more invested in the project, because they are, actually, financially invested in it.

With all of that said (and a lot more in the actual video), if you haven't raised your prices in awhile, it's time to do so. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the results. Always remember - you're in charge of how much you charge. And you have a massive amount of responsibility, to yourself, to protect your time, energy and finances.
