[Synopsis]

In this video, I make a 286 machine with PCEM V.17. The 286 was released in 1982 with the Intel 80286 4 Mhz, and in the summer of 1985, the 286 10/12 Mhz were released. The 286 line of IBM computers was called the IBM AT, and this was released one year after the IBM XT which was released in 1983. The fastest 286 was a 25 MHz released in 1991. The 286 CPU was a 16 bit processor with a 16 bit bus, and it used a 16 bit operating system, like MS-DOS. 286 based PCs could run programs from 1982 to 1990. This CPU used the 1.5µm process, and a typical 286 processor had about 120,000 to 134,000 transistors. A 386SX/DX had about 275,000 to 855,000 transistors at 1.5µm to 1µm process.

286 based computers were fairly common back in the mid 1980s to the late 1980s, a number of my friends had 286 machines, and the most common variants were the 10 Mhz and 12 Mhz models. I didn't see 16 MHz or 25 Mhz models back in the day. These computers typically came with EGA graphics adapters, but some did have 8 bit VGA as well. VGA wasn't a common feature in these machines. Most 286s had only PC speaker sound, but it was possible to put a Adlib ISA sound card in these computers. Back in the day, I didn't know one person that had a sound card in a 286.

As for running MS-DOS based games, 286s will enable you to play a wide array of games up from the early 1980s to 1990. Programs and games after 1990 require more expanded memory, and more performance. You also had better operating systems, like Microsoft Windows 3.X which wasn't ideal to use with a 286. The ideal computer for using MS Windows 3.X was a 386 DX or a 486 DX back in the 1990s. Even in the early 1990s, a lot of people were using MS-DOS as their primary operating system. In my case, I used MS-DOS as a primary O.S. up to 1994, and in 1994 I got Windows 3.11 with a Pentium 100 MHz based computer. 286 was a great 16 bit computer of the 1980s, like Motorola 68000 based computers were.
