Extrema Ratio Fulcrum Bayonet NFG Desert Review

Extrema Ratio Fulcrum Bayonet NFG Desert full field review. The Extrema Ratio Fulcrum Bayonet NFG Desert (no fixing gear) Made in Italy, is a sort of civilian version of the Fulcrum Bayonet. It has all the same features as the Fulcrum Bayonet except it can not be mounted to a rifle. This model featured here is the Desert Stone wash light version. The light version (There is currently only one model however there are 3 NFG models in total) has a wide elastic strap to help retain the wire cutter/scabbard in place. The scabbard also features a diamond sharpening plate on the back of the glass reinforced scabbard.

Being able to cut and bend thick wire can be a real bonus as many things can be made with bits of scrap wire around the campsite. You would be surprised with the ever decreasing wilderness and combined with the fact that man's presence can be found in the most way out places like old derelict mining camps etc where one can sometimes readily find old bits of wire. It's not good if you can't easily cut it. Sure you can take along a pair of pliers but it's just an extra. This knife will also cut electrical cable (NOT LIVE OF COURSE*) and this stuff can be used to tied up things etc. I easily cut brand new to new double stranded barbed wire and bend heavy gauge fencing wire.

The design of the knife allows it to be firmly and safely bound and lashed- you'll see what I mean and the serrations, whilst not very deep, allow effective production of tinder.

The 40 mm of serrations can help to cut very tough material like climbing webbing (I cut 3000kg breaking strength webbing). The blade is stout enough for light prying too. The carry system is simple and modular and the scabbard can be at the ready in mere seconds in order to use the wire cutter facility.

Needless to say the factory hand ground edge was extremely razor sharp. Bohler N690 Cobalt martensitic stainless tool steel is a great tool steel for knives subjected to harsh environmental conditions. The blade can be easily and quickly be maintained (HRC 58) as essentially there are only 2 straight edges to keep sharp. The Extrema Ratio Fulcrum Bayonet NFG is essentially a "tool" .

The tip is very strong and the angle of penetration makes for a quick bow drill hole if making friction fires is your fancy too.
The handle is Forprene and it helps to absorb shock and hands can not freeze to any exposed tang in sub zero temperatures. It is easily disassembled for field maintenance and the required Allen key driver is included.

The Extrema Ratio Fulcrum Bayonet NFG Desert has all the same mechanical characteristics of the Fulcrum Bayonet and this is a military proven blade design. I've put my other Fulcrum through the works and this one was no different, with exceptions of being bigger and more comfortable without gloves on. A strong tang like the Extrema Ratio AMF, the Fulcrum Bayonet NFG Desert makes for a tough as "survival-type" knife. The Extrema Ratio Fulcrum Bayonet NFG is perfectly at home in the wilderness. Maybe it's right for you?
