How to replace the center support Hanger/Carrier Bearing on various 2015-2019era Dodge Charger, Challenger models.
1. Remove Driveshaft from the car and mark all components with a paint marker or center punch. THIS IS IMPORTANT - to retain your balance when reassembling the driveshaft.
2. Use a flat blade screw driver and release/remove the boot clamps.
3. "Lightly" place driveshaft in a vice to help hold the shaft.
4. Use a flat blade screw driver to slightly peel the metal can from the Hi-speed cv joint. The metal can is rolled/crimped over to retain it onto the cv pod. Once its partially peeled up - you can tap the can and boot back.
5. The boot/metal can will be in the way - but you should make notes and mark how the cv components are installed in relation to the splines and the outer cv pod/race and other marks made earlier.
6. Using a small flat blade screw driver - feel your way around and find the break in the large outer snap ring. Use the screw driver to peel the snap ring up and outer of the groove.
7. Place a small pan or rag down the catch any of the balls/cv parts that will fall out. Grab ahold of the shaft and pull the 2 shafts apart.
8. Again - mark the inner race in relation to the splined shaft. Place the shaft in a press with a bearing separator on the back side of the race. Press on the end of the shaft and the inner race will slide off and past the inner snap ring.
9. Slide the boot off. Again, place the shaft in the press and remove the carrier bearing.
10. Install carrier bearing. Use a piece of tubing that is the same size as the bearings inner race - and drive the bearing on with a hammer.
11. Install the boot - do not clamp yet.
12. Remove any snap ring remnants and any major burrs from the splined shaft. Install the inner race back onto the shaft. You may want to place a small tack weld at the end of the splined shaft to ensure the inner race does not walk off (or, find a suitable inner snap ring replacement).
13. Place fresh grease in the "outer" cv pod.
14. Dab some grease liberally on the inner race grooves. Place the floating race over the inner race. Use grease to help hold the balls in the floating race windows. Grasp your hand around it to hold the balls into the inner race and the floating race.
15. Install back into the outer cv pod. MAKE SURE - to align the cv properly (Narrow - to - Wide). If you do not do this = the cv joint will not rotate properly and will be locked up - causing vibration or early carrier bearing failure.!! Ensure all your previous alignment marks are as close as possible to retain the original balancing of the driveshaft.!
16. Install large outer snap ring.
17. Clean the outer cv pod and the metal boot can area. Use RTV between these 2 surfaces.
18. Slide metal can over the outer cv pod. Try and use a hammer to "round" the metal of the can over - and into the groove of the outer cv pod. You may want to place a liberal amount on the outside of these mating surfaces. As the grease wears in and heats up - it could leak out of these mating areas if not crimped properly.
19. Again, ensure the when the 2 sections are joined up - you can grab one end of the driveshaft and move it up/down/left/right to ensure the cv is assembled properly.
