In his composition Kumintang, Buencamino emplys the rhythm of the kumintang blended with the romantic bravura style of pianist (particularly of Lisztian influence) manifested in the lyrical passages, sweeping arpeggios, swelling chromatics, wide leaps, fast-paces octaves, and thunderous chords.

The Kumintang originated as a war song that eventually evolved into a kundiman, an art song which was prevalent during the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Jean Baptiste Mallat describes it as a pantomimic dance where the man runs around and gestures to a woman(not always decently), and finally pretends illness to get the woman's full attention.
