December Snow - Korg Wavestate

Live Ambient Berlin School jam inspired by snow, ice, wind and frost - using a custom 4-layer patch on the Korg Wavestate.

The Pitch Envelope in Layer D (arp 2 melody) is used as an oscillator by having it retrigger when it drops below -2. The speed of this envelope-turned-oscillator is controlled by Pitch Envelope Decay time, which is modulated by the Amp LFO. The Pitch Envelope modulates the Filter Resonance. The result is a kind of “dirty”, wobbly sound. To add to the variation, the modulation amount is again modulated by the slowly moving Pan LFO.

A similar technique is used for the pad in Layer C. The pitch envelope retriggers and modulates the High Pass amount of a Multi Filter. Pitch envelope decay is modulated by the Pan LFO, varying the frequency of the retriggered envelope, creating a nice windy texture. This Layer uses a Decimator effect with a slowly looping LFO modifying sample frequency, resulting in slow sweeps in the higher frequencies.

Wavestate performance mod knobs:
Knob 1: Layer A (arp melody 1) Octave
Knob 2: Layer B (arp bass) Octave
Knob 3: Layer C (pad) Octave
Knob 4: Layer D (arp melody 2) Octave
Knob 5: Layer A (arp melody 1) Amp Level
Knob 6: Layer B (arp bass) Amp Level
Knob 7: Layer C (pad) Amp Level
Knob 8: Layer D (arp melody 2) Amp Level

Joystick X turns Layer A (arp melody 1) into sfx.
Joystick Y more Delay on Layer B (arp bass) and less Reverb overall. The dotted eighth delays bakes the bass busier.
ModWheel makes everything softer and dreamy, by increasing Amp and Frequency Envelope Attack and reducing Filter Envelope Intensity.

The audio is recorded to SD card on a Zoom R16 recorder/mixer and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on a Canon EOS M50 mk2 with the included EF-M 15-45mm lens. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 18 (free version).
