Only fear the LORD and serve Him in truth with all your heart (1 Sa 12:24–25).

• In chapters 1-7, Samuel is born to Hannah, a previously barren woman, and she dedicates him to God. God raises up Samuel as prophet and judge. Samuel serves God faithfully all his life.

• In chapters 8-15, the Israelites demand that Samuel appoint a king. Samuel anoints Saul to be king, and Saul serves God and Israel faithfully for a period. After a series of bad decisions including direct disobedience to God, Saul realizes that God rejected him as the rightful king.

• In chapters 16-31, God instructs Samuel to anoint David, a young shepherd, who becomes a man after God’s own heart. David stands up to a Philistine giant that challenges Israel for 3 consecutive days. With God as his protector, David defeats Goliath with one precise swoop from a stone in full view of both the Israeli and Philistine armies. Saul begins to pursue David out of spite and fear of losing his throne. On two occasions, David could have easily taken Saul's life; but David dare not lift his hand against God's anointed. In the end, Saul tragically takes his own life while losing on the battlefield.
