The book of 2 Samuel begins with David learning of King Saul's defeat by the Philistines. David writes a song lamenting the deaths of Saul and his close friend, Jonathan. God has not left Israel without a leader. David goes to Hebron, where his followers and the southern tribe of Judah anoint him as king.

Meanwhile, Saul’s chief commander, Abner, garners the Israeli troops in a series of small hand-to-hand combat against the army of Joab, David’s general.
