Eight hundred and sixty-two kilometers from Bamako to Ouagadougou by foot. That's the cost for activists who are pushing for a federation between the two West African states.

Holding the flags of both countries and the African Union, the group of about a dozen men and women walked single file over the weekend on the side of a road surrounded by scrubland near Hounde in western Burkina Faso.

They left the Malian capital on Feb. 27, and it's not clear when they hope to reach Burkina Faso's capital.

Last month, prime ministers of Mali and Burkina Faso held a joint press conference and said they would examine the idea of creating a federation.
