The true villain in Black Myth: Wukong is someone you might not have expected and there’s a good chance you missed it all together. It's none other than the elder monkey, who sets you on your journey and accompanies you through Wukong’s memories in the ending parts of the game.

*MAJOR SPOILERS* When you go through all the endings of the game, it becomes clear that the elder monkey has been deceiving you all along. While guiding you to reclaim Wukong's relics and preparing you to be his successor, it's heavily implied the elder monkey was most likely on the side of the Forces of Heaven, and was tasked to misguide “the Destined One” to eventually wear the golden headband, a tool they used to control Sun Wukong. The truth about Wukong’s fate is revealed in what is considered the “true ending” of the game where you recover Wukong’s memories and that his ultimate goal was to break free from the Celestial Court’s control and the golden headband.

In what is considered the “bad ending”, where you don’t recover Wukong’s memories, The elder monkey places the headband on you after the final fight, repeating the cycle of control that plagued Wukong, and this would imply that you have failed Sun Wukong’s goal of freedom. This twist redefines the elder monkey’s role, showing that he was never just a guide, but an active force working against Wukong’s true path to freedom.
