Although the bassline in the original recording with Nathan East is with a low D (5-string or drop D tuning on a 4-string), I’ve made a basscover with a 4-string bassline and use standard E-A-D-G tuning.

In the intro Nathan plays a low D on the first beat of the bar (for instance bar 5) and bends the D note on the fourth beat of the bar a bit. In this 4-string version you play the D note twive in a row (on the fourth beat and the first beat). To give a bit of an accent between these notes I use a slide on the D from the first beat of the bar and I bend the D note on the fourth count of the bar.

When you buy the transcription you’ll be send the 4- and also 5-string version!

What I like about this bassline is how Nathan bends the D-note in the maingroove. Listen for instance at bars 5-8 where he bends the D note (on the fourth beat/count). I also like how he uses slides. Listen for instance at bar 12 where he slides the D-note (on the fourth beat/count). An other example of a nice slide is in bar 14 where he slides towards the A note. In the interlude he uses ghost notes to give accent to the lick which is played there by the band (bar 18-19).

Nathan plays some very nice variations on the Dm chord. Listen for instance at bars 25; 29; 51; 59; 65 and 67.

Nathan East is certainly one of my favorite bassplayers. He uses groove; melodic lines and is always playing what s song needs. Fantastic to learn from this master!

I play this song on a Fender Jazzbass. Standard E-A-D-G tuning. I use a bit of compression and a pre-amp. No further effects used. Don’t forget to tune your bass a bit higher A4 = 442 Hz.
