Certain famous song keeps me surprising for it’s bassline. And this is also the case for the bassline of Layla. It didn’t really occur to me that Carl Radle plays some great licks in this song. Listen for instance at bars 17-20 in the first Verse. He repeats this great lick in every Verse.
The main groove in the Chorus stays the same. I think the ‘secret' of the maingroove is within playing a short (staccato) note on the eight note of the second and fourth beat. And also in keeping the last eight note of the fourth note (note = c) in every even bar a bit short.
In Part two Carl Radle plays some fine melodic lines. He keeps is straight on the C and Em chord, which gives him the opportunity to plays variations on the Bb en F chords.

Please mind that you have to tune your bass to A4 = 447 Hz. And I think that part two was mastered or rerecorded at an other time, because there you have to tune your bass to A4 = 450 Hz.

I play this song on a Fender Jazzbass with roundwound strings. Standard E-A-D-G tuning. No effects used.

Bass: Carl Radle
Single released in 1970
Composers: Eric Clapton, Jim Gordon
