Traditional Milk tart recipe | Melktert resep | Family recipes | The King of South African desserts

This is our family heirloom Melktert (Milk tart) recipe. This Melktert has a sweet, crumbly crust with delicious notes of vanilla and butter. The rich and creamy filling has a distinctive almond and milk aroma, DELICIOUS! This recipe took me on a journey back to my happy childhood, dankie Ouma.

Recipe

Crust
∙ ¾ cup butter
∙ 1 egg
∙ 2½ tablespoons sugar
∙ 1½ cups cake flour
∙ ½ teaspoon salt
∙ 1½ teaspoons vanilla essence

Milk tart filling
∙ 1 L milk
∙ cinnamon stick
∙ ½ cup cake flour
∙ ½ cup cornflour
∙ 1¼ cup sugar
∙ 4 eggs separated
∙ ¼ cup butter
∙ 2 teaspoons almond essence
∙ pinch of salt
∙ Cinnamon
