Date of Erection of the Sarai::-

There is no inscription on the sarai. The only clue to the date of its erection is provided by the type of its glazed tile decoration. The design was first formed by ridges of bricks or plaster in this mode of glazed tile work. Then, the spaces were filled up with glazed tiles of various colours . This type of work was prevalent upto Jahangir's reign, i.e. 1627 A.D. Moreover, the colour scheme of the tiles was limited to light and deep blue, green, yellow and white and designs were mostly geometrical upto this period. During Shah Jahan's reign and later too, glazed tile decoration dispays a richer palette and foliated and floral patterns. The interven- ing ridges also disappear. Glazed tile decoration similar to that on the Doraha Sarai appears on the tomb of Ustad at Nakodar (District Jalandhar, Punjab), dated 1612 A.D. Therefore, this sarai might presumably have been erected before 1627 A.D. The lower date limit of the construction of the sarai can be fixed as per the fact that William Finch, a British traveller, who passed through Doraha in 1611 A.D., while travelling from Agra to Lahore, does not mention the existence of any sarai at Doraha; whereas he distinetly mentions other sarais en route . So the date of erection of the Doraha Sarai, most probably, lies somewhere between 1611 and 1627 A.D.

दोराहा की सराय का इतिहास:--

इस सराय पर कोई शिलालेख नहीं मिला है।
तो इसीलिए इसके निर्माण की तारीख का एकमात्र सुराग
इसमे चमकती हुई tiles के आधार पर लगाया जाता है
जो सजावट के लिए प्रयोग में लाई गई थी
क्योंकि इस प्रकार का काम
जहाँगीर (1605—1627)
और
शाहजहाँ (1628-1658) के शासनकाल के दौरान देखने को मिलता है

और Glazed Tile के काम की इस Technique में डिजाइन को सबसे पहले ईंटों और प्लास्टर से बनाया गया था। फिर, रिक्त स्थानों को विभिन्न रंगों की चमकती हुई टाइलों से भर दिया जाता था ।

और इसी सराय के समान चमकती हुई टाइल की सजावट नकोदर (जिला जालंधर, पंजाब) में उस्ताद के मकबरे पर दिखाई देती है, जो 1612 में बनी थी

इस सराय के निर्माण की निचली तिथि सीमा इस तथ्य के अनुसार तय की जा सकती है कि विलियम फिंच, एक ब्रिटिश यात्री, जो 1611 ईस्वी में आगरा से लाहौर जाते समय दोराहा से भी गुजरे थे और उन्होंने अपनी पुस्तक मे यहाँ किसी सराय के अस्तित्व का उल्लेख नहीं किया था। जबकि रास्ते में मिलने वाली अन्य सरायों का उल्लेख उनकी पुस्तक में मिलता है

तो इसलिए दोराहा सराय के निर्माण की तारीख, 1611 और 1627 ईस्वी के बीच की मानी जाती है।
