hi guys welcome back in this tutorial we're going to be discussing all about stop taps and how they work so i have a few examples here in front of me

this is called a short lever boiler stop we know this is 15 millimeter as you can see it has a smaller thread than a 20 millimeter this tap is used underneath basins one in kitchen sinks you close off the water to the mixer so you don't have to go and close the mains off outside the way this works is a simple you can see inside there there's a little ball so as soon as you close it let me just get this closed as soon as you close it you can see the ball that rolls inside which shuts the water off there and you're able to change your tap washer or change your cartridge or whatever you need to change so it's called a 15 millimeter male by female baller stop short lever because it's got a short lever next we have a 15 millimeter conex stop tap this works like a normal tap where you close it clockwise it will be closed and anti-clockwise will be open the nice thing about this type of tap it can be fully repairable if the gland leaks over there you would basically loosen the gland put a bit of hemp around there and tighten it you could also change this tap washer this tap works with the tap washer so this tap could be fully repaired unless it springs a leak here which would have to be replaced then

next we have a common gate valve this is used in the older types of buildings well they still use it today but this has got a red lever so what you do is you turn it clockwise and this is the way you close this tap this is a 15 millimeter conex codex will be discussed in the next video tutorial so you'll learn all about that so let's move on to the 20 millimeter gate valve this is also conex the way this works exactly the same as the half inch except this does not have a tap washer in this has a gate in so what happens is you can see inside there how the gate opens and closes so when you want to close the mains to your house you will just close this instead of closing your meter and this will close your mains further we have a 15 millimeter long lever boiler stop this is female by female so the way this works is it's got a half a turn it's got a hyper turn you turn it like that and it shuts the water off this is used outside your building if you want to close off a piece of your pipe work normally this gets installed and this is how it gets shut then we have the 20 millimeter exactly the same as the 15 millimeter this obviously cannot be repaired so if it's leaking it needs to be replaced also turn the handle like that to shut the water off always important thing to learn or to remember is when the handle is in line with the pipe the water is open when the handle is like that across it closes the water so that's a way to determine the water is opened or closed then we get a fancy tap like this it actually works with a cover plate which goes over there so this gets used inside your toilet or in underneath the basin in the more modern places this if this leaks it would have to be changed it could not be repaired so basically how it works is like a normal tap you'll just close it and you'll open it this is just a fancier means of closing water inside your bathroom as this works on all modern day bathrooms so thank you for listening to this lesson i hope you've learned a lot let's see you in the next lesson you
