How did such a huge ABANDONED house become this bad in 10 years

The original house was built in 1777 near the site of a huge battle between the Scottish and the English, some have said they still hear the pipes and drums in the distance! The now Abandoned hall was later upgraded in the 1870s and had many uses including a war hospital, a hotel and was even owned by the YMCA!
