Located in the county of Greater Manchester (although historically in Cheshire), and around five miles southwest of central Manchester, is the town of Sale.

The name 'Sale' is thought to be derived from the Anglo Saxon 'sealh', a willow, meaning 'the place where the willows grew'. During the medieval era, the area was a small farming community. This began to change in the 18th century with the coming of the Industrial Revolution.

In 1761 the Bridgewater Canal opened. Initially it connected Worsley to Manchester. By 1765 it had been extended south, reaching Sale. This brought about the means for the town to transport goods to and from Manchester and other destinations.

Although Sale benefitted from the canal, its population growth remained slow up until the arrival of the railway in the town, which occurred in 1849 courtesy of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway. The station closed in December 1991 and reopened in June 1992 as a station on the then brand new Manchester Metrolink tramway. It is situated on the Altrincham line, providing access to central Manchester within around 20 minutes, making Sale a popular commuter town.

Between 1801 (the year of the first census) and 1901 the population of Sale went from 819 to 12,088 and has continued to rise ever since. One of the key buildings in the town reflects this period of growth, namely Sale Town Hall, which was built between 1914 and 1915. During the Manchester Blitz of December 1940, the building was badly damaged. Restoration work was carried out in 1952, which included the installation of a new clock tower.

Sale is represented in sport by rugby union club Sale Sharks. Founded in 1861 as Sale Football Club, they adopted the Sharks nickname in 1999. The town is also home to athletics club Sale Harriers Manchester. One of its notable former athletes is Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell. Born and raised in the town itself, Campbell was part of the British men's 4x100 metre relay team that won gold in Athens 2004. Oh, and Manchester United are based three miles away.

Famous people from Sale include musician David Gray, comedian/presenter Karl Pilkington and footballers Phil Jagielka and Ben Mee.
