Metropolitan Museum of New York adds Afro-Ecuadorean instrument to collection On the morning of March 3, 2014 , the 'Chota Madre Cultural Group' will be donating a bomba drum, an important cultural symbol of the mainly Afro-Ecuadorian region of Ecuador (Chota Valley) to the Metropolitan Museum of New York. The donation will de added to the Frederick P. Rose collection of musical instruments at the MET.

J. Kenneth Moore, curator in charge of the collection, states that "the drum is a superlative example that will improve the instrument collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York , and fill a gap in the collection that was established in the nineteenth century." The museum plans to preserve, catalog and display this instrument for future programming.

The 'Chota Madre Cultural Group' was established to promote the music and dance from the Chota Valley . This region of Ecuador offers a unique style of bomba music, a result of the cultural exchange between the region's indigenous population, mestizos and Afro- descendants in the northern provinces of Ecuador . This musical genre is characterized by the percussion rythms of the bomba drum accompanied by a five-string guitar, a güiro or gourd and singers . 'Chota Madre Cultural Group' gathers talented dancers and choreographers, such as: Veronica Calero, musicians: Alan Borja Mateo , José Juan Paredes , Christian Teran, audiovisual support by Dario Pantosin and research by Jose Obando, Ati Egas and Gabriel Roldós

Craftsman Cristóbal Segundo Barahona, creator of the bomba drum, is making travel arrangements to visit us from the region of 'el Chota' to New York City. Also, the invitation was also extended to the Minister and Deputy Minister of Culture of Ecuador, who are also making arrangements for the visit.
