Cycling Incidents 68: YT19 EKZ (Close Pass). Police Outcome!

2020 - Video 68 (WITH POLICE OUTCOME)

YT19 EKZ, YT19EKZ, YT19-EKZ Burton Roofing (https://www.burtonroofing.co.uk/) 12/05/2020 At 15:25 - travelling East bound on the A657 (just where New Line becomes Carr Rd) heading from Greengates Bradford in the direction of Calverley Leeds... The "Burton Roofing" HGV, REG: YT19 EKZ passed me with literally centimetres to spare... I do not know what this driver was thinking. This pass was utterly criminal and really freaked me out. Genuinely thought I was going to die. At the time of the event I was shocked, but when I watched the footage back I felt sick to my stomach. Police were equally shocked by the footage, and summoned the driver to an interview. The driver apparently apologised initially saying he was sorry to hear the cyclist was so scared, but insisted he had done nothing wrong and that cyclists shouldn't be in the road if they scare so easily. The driver was then shown the footage, at which point the police were appalled to report that he still denied any wrong doing. The police explained that had he demonstrated an understanding of what he did wrong and shown remorse, they would've gone back to me, the cyclist, and discussed going the route of a caution. The driver became more indignant at which point he was asked to accept an Fine of £100 and 2 points on his license. The driver refused and told the police based on the video evidence this would get thrown out of court. The courts doubled the points and fine. What saddens me - this is anecdotal evidence I can't erase from my world experience that there are some truly cold, cruel and deluded folk on our roads. Even in the face of disciplinary action/conviction, this maniac was still happy to push on with their warped anti-cyclist agenda of promoting fear and violence on the roads.
