The 232nd video of my train spotting adventures.
-----
This video begins a series of videos in and around the wider Southampton region, though beginning along the line further Southwest to Bournemouth railway station. A fair-sized, 4-platform DfT Category C1 "Important Feeder" train station, it was first opened in 1885 as 'Bournemouth East', replacing a station of the same name which had existed since 1870, the first station built in Bournemouth, but proved unbefitting of a rich and growing town such as Bournemouth. Another station, Bournemouth West, opened in 1874, proving to be much more popular and suited for the towns needs as the branch of track from Poole opened at that time, serving most trains on the now closed Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR).
-
The new Bournemouth East, renamed to 'Bournemouth Central' in 1899 and then to 'Bournemouth' in 1967 following the closure of Bournemouth West (which had initially been a temporary closure), by this time third-rail electrification had reached Bournemouth, but went no further than the nearby Bournemouth Traincare Depot and Branksome railway station; this led to older EMUs such as the 4REP units being coupled up to underpowered 4TC units, which were detached and hooked up to Class 33 locomotives to travel the length of the line to Weymouth. The introduction of Class 442 EMUs and the electrification of the line from Branksome to Weymouth caused this practise end eventually.
-
The end of these practices also saw the eventual removal of the central running tracks between Platforms 2 & 3, and the demolition of the nearby locomotive sheds, which now sees a carpark sitting on their former location. The station roof was badly damaged during the Great Storm of 1987 that hit the South of England. Railtrack refurbished the roof after 2000, after many years of protective scaffolding being present to prevent falling debris from hitting passengers. Ticket barriers were erected in 2008.
