Shiva destroyed tripura ( the 3 cities created by Tarakasur’s three sons ) and thus became Tripuraantakaaya.

After Lord Kartekaya, son of Shiva and Goddess Parvathi killed the Tarakasur, his kingdom fell apart. Tarakasur’s three sons namely , Tarakaksha, Vidhyunmaali and Kamalaksha, did rigorous penance for Lord Brahma.

After a few years, Lord Brahma gave Darshan to the 3 brothers and asked them for their desired boon.

The 3 asuras said “ Hey Lord ! Please help us in building 3 indestructible cities”.

Brahma says “ everything in this world is perishable. Anyways , I'm giving a boon that , the 3 cities would be very strong and will only be destroyed with one arrow “.

The chief architect of the Asuras named Maya, designed and built the 3 cities. It is believed that the cities were made up of Gold, silver and Iron respectively. They were collectively called tripura ( three cities ).

The cities would float apart from each other , but once in every thousand years , they would align in a single line, and this phenomenon would last for only a split of a second.

After a few years , the 3 asuras were never content with the 3 cities , so wanted to occupy more of the Universe. The 3 Asura brothers, started to trouble all the sages , humans and made them as slaves for building a new city again.

Then, all the Gods pleaded Shiva to relieve them from the 3 Asuras atrocities.

All devas and Lord Indra fought with the 3 asuras, but couldn't win over them. The most prominent thing was , the three cities were very strong , and continuously moving / floating and no one could enter into them.

At last , God Shiva entered into battlefield.

Shiva raised his Pinaka bow and aimed one arrow to strike the cities. The arrow split the three cities in one go, as it was the moment of alignment, reducing the Maya’s magnificent cities into ash, finally restoring peace in the Universe...
