Electrical recordings from 1925 revisited

Описание к видео Electrical recordings from 1925 revisited

In a previous video last year, I mistakenly identified this as an acoustically recorded 78 RPM record. It is, in fact, one of the first ever electrically recorded 78s put out by Victor, done in June 1925. This was months before Victor announced the new recording method to the public, so the only indication on the disc is a small "VE" (for "Victor Electrical", I presume) stamped into the lead-out groove area of each side. Using a correct 3-mil 78 RPM stylus on my Audio-Technica turntable also reproduces the disc more cleanly than the standard LP microgroove stylus I used last time, which caused much more surface noise.

The strident singing style and tuba bass on this record were still much in keeping with acoustical recordings, but the wider frequency response and greater sensitivity of the electrical recording allows softer instruments to be heard, such as the flute and celesta. This improvement can be heard even when playing the disc on an acoustic phonograph.
