Here we have J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘Beren and Lúthien’, edited by Christopher Tolkien and published by HarperCollins in 2017. The book is illustrated by Alan Lee.

This edition comes with a dust-jacket and it’s bound in paper. I wasn’t aware when I bought this book that it would have a glued perfect binding with poor quality non acid-free paper, but sadly it’s just a paperback in disguise. The paper is printed in one colour and Alan Lee’s illustrations are printed on glossy photographic paper, and it opens up very very poorly. The book is printed and bound in the UK.

I assume there is a slightly more expensive edition that comes with a sewn binding, acid-free paper and a silk-ribbon, but I was quite disappointed seeing the poor quality of this book. It’s really tiring to order hardcover editions and find out that they are just expensive paperbacks. I don’t know if I will try getting a sewn edition, if it even exists for Beren and Lúthien, but right now I’m just a bit annoyed with HarperCollins… yet again.
