1988 Jockey Club Gold Cup - Waquoit

Описание к видео 1988 Jockey Club Gold Cup - Waquoit

Waquoit splashed to a 15-length victory in the $1,063,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup yesterday on a Belmont Park track so sloppy that two Kentucky Derby winners were scratched from the card.

Alysheba, last year's Derby winner and a winner of $4.9 million in his career, would have been the Gold Cup favorite but was withdrawn from the race an hour before it went off.

Winning Colors, the 3-year-old filly who won this year's Derby, was an early scratch from the Rare Perfume Stakes earlier on the program, which was won by Topicount. Far Apart at the Finish

Waquoit was never headed in a race where the four starters were far apart at the finish. Waquoit lengthened his lead through the stretch to score by 15 lengths over Personal Flag, who had 20 lengths on Easy N Dirty. Creme Fraiche, the 6-year-old gelding who won the last two Gold Cups, was last yesterday, 19 1/2 lengths behind Easy N Dirty and beaten 54 1/2 lengths by the winner.
