Crossing Medano Pass

Join us as we leave Great Sand Dunes National Park and head deep into the backcountry of Medano Pass and the Great Sandy Dunes National Preserve.

Learn about the landscape and challenges of Medano Pass Primitive Road and the nine water crossings you'll encounter on this moderately difficult route. For most high clearance four wheel drive vehicles, Medano Pass is not much of a challenge. But was we drag your Boreas XT Adventure Trailer through this very tight trail, there is little room for error. Especially when we get to the boulder squeeze.

Medano Pass can be completed in 2.5 - 3 hours. But I recommend going slow and camping in one of the 21 free campsites in the National Preserve. For the truly adventurous, take a hike to an alpine lake or fly fish along Medano Creek for the elusive cutthroat trout.
