Kerala Style Chicken Curry with Roasted Coconut | Varutharcha Chicken Curry

Kerala Chicken Curry with roasted Coconut or Varutharacha Chicken Curry as called in Malayalam (native language of the people residing in Kerala ) is a popular chicken curry from Kerala especially Malabar region. The roasted coconut along with a lot of spices makes the chicken curry very traditional in its taste. We are using some whole spices and blended along with roasted coconut which makes our chicken curry very flavourful. We can accompany this curry with Rice, Puttu, Appam, Idiyappam (Nool appam) and what not.

This will take some time for the preparation, but trust me the curry tastes heavenly good.

Ingredients :

For the Masala to be ground to paste :

2 nos Green Cardamom
2 small Cinnamon Sticks
10 to 12 Peppercorns
3 nos Cloves
½ tsp Fennel Seeds
250 gms Coconut (freshly grated)
Few curry leaves
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
1 tbsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
2 tbsp Coriander Powder
2 tbsp Coconut Oil
½ cup Water (to rinse the masala plate & use)

For the Gravy :

2 tbsp Coconut Oil
2 medium size (220 gms) Onions finely chopped
½ tsp Salt
1 tsp Ginger finely chopped
1 ½ tsp Garlic finely chopped
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
1 tsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
500 gms Chicken curry cut pieces
3 to 4 nos Green Chillies
Few curry leaves
2 medium size (160 gms)Tomatoes chopped
250 to 300 ml Water (to rinse the grinder jar)
1 tsp Garam Masala Powder

For Tadka/Tempering :

½ tsp Mustard Seeds
3 to 4 Shallots finely chopped
3 nos Dry Red Chillies
Few curry leaves
