Majetok bol od roku 1007 vo vlastníctve biskupstva v Bambergu. Samotný hrad sa prvýkrát spomína v roku 1178 v listine z opátstva svätého Pavla. Bol to predpoklad rozvoja rovnomennej osady, ktorá sa v roku 1289 povýšila na mesto. Od druhej štvrtiny 14. storočia až do predaja celého Bambergského panstva v Korutánsku rakúskemu štátu v roku 1759 slúžil hrad ako tzv. bydlisko vicedomina, ktorý zastupoval biskupa v miestnych otázkach. Budovu pozostávajúcu z dvoch nepravidelných, vzájomne prepojených krídel premenili talianski architekti v 16. storočí na pevnosť, ktorá mala chrániť pred blížiacimi sa Turkami. Zároveň bol areál rozšírený o domáce budovy, brány a veže. V roku 1561 bola postavená zvonica.

V roku 1846 získal priekopník priemyslu Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck barónstvo z Wolfsbergu najmä kvôli bohatstvu dreva a vodnej energie, ktoré potreboval na prevádzku svojich železiarní. Zámok prestaval v rokoch 1847 až 1853 na palác v anglickom tudorovskom štýle pomocou dvoch viedenských architektov Johanna Romana a Augusta Schwendenweina a nechal postaviť honosne zdobený interiér. Z bývalej renesančnej budovy nezostalo tam takmer nič.

Aj areál hradu pochádza z 50. rokov 19. storočia. Rozsiahla krajinná záhrada je jednou z najvýznamnejších záhradných architektonických pamiatok v Rakúsku a je uvedená v pamiatkovom zákone.

Súčasným vlastníkom panstva je Kärntner Montanindustrie (korutánsky banský priemysel).

The property was owned by the Bishopric of Bamberg from 1007. The castle itself is mentioned for the first time in 1178 in a document from the abbey of St. Paul. It was a prerequisite for the development of the settlement of the same name, which was elevated to a city in 1289. From the second quarter of the 14th century until the sale of the entire Bamberg estate in Carinthia to the Austrian state in 1759, the castle served as a so-called the residence of the vice-domin, who represented the bishop in local matters. The building, consisting of two irregular, interconnected wings, was transformed by Italian architects in the 16th century into a fortress to protect against the approaching Turks. At the same time, the area was expanded to include domestic buildings, gates and towers. A bell tower was built in 1561.

In 1846, industrial pioneer Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck acquired the barony of Wolfsberg mainly because of the wealth of wood and water power he needed to run his ironworks. He rebuilt the castle between 1847 and 1853 into a palace in the English Tudor style with the help of two Viennese architects, Johann Roman and August Schwendenwein, and had a sumptuously decorated interior built. There is almost nothing left of the former Renaissance building.

The castle area also dates from the 1950s. The extensive landscape garden is one of the most important landscape architectural monuments in Austria and is listed in the Monuments Act.

The current owner of the estate is Kärntner Montanindustrie (Carinthian mining industry).
