Speaker Biography: Dr. Wouter Peelaerts is an experienced neuroscientist with special expertise in degenerative brain diseases. He earned his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from KU Leuven and subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship there focused on neurobiology and gene therapy under the mentorship of Prof. Veerle Baekelandt. His efforts helped uncover new insights that further link the abnormal protein alpha-synuclein to neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Parkinson’s and multiple system atrophy. In 2017, he joined the lab of Dr. Patrik Brundin at Van Andel Institute, MI, USA where he focused on drug repurposing of anti-diabetic drugs and studied how peripheral infections can trigger Parkinson’s and multiple system atrophy.

Webinar Abstract: Several age-related neurodegenerative disorders are characterized by the deposition of aberrantly folded proteins. The histopathological hallmark of synucleinopathies is the deposition of ɑ-synuclein (ɑSyn) protein in the central and peripheral nervous system. The functional and pathological role of ɑSyn protein aggregates in these progressive brain disorders, which includes different types of Lewy body diseases (LBDs), such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) have been actively investigated. Even though the pleomorphic nature of these syndromes might suggest different underlying causes, ɑSyn appears to play an important role in this heterogeneous group of diseases.
