In this jazz guitar lesson I'm going to be analysing Joe Pass guitar licks and lines. I'll show you how Joe used arpeggios, superimpositions, the use of augmented chords and his passion for #11s. I'll explain each of the four Joe Pass jazz licks in this tutorial note for note. I've chosen different positions, so you'll have the entire fretboard covered. Disecting a Joe Pass guitar solo is a great way to understand how he thought and thusly improve ones' own jazz guitar style.

The licks / lines are between 1 and 4 measures long. So it's easier to memorize them. I've picked Joe Pass jazz guitar solo licks for the following chord progressions: mixolydian, V7alt - I, II - V - I (altered and mixolydian V, because Joe used them both).

Of course I've also made a Joe Pass licks tab including regular notation. This will make it easier for you to see and understand what's going on and analyze his style. Joe Pass was a true virtuoso on guitar. But you don't need to be a virtuoso in order to follow and play along this Joe Pass jazz guitar lesson. There's only one lick I consider harder to play. And I show you a pretty nifty trick to make it a lot easier ;-) Because I don't want you to get frustrated. The other licks are really quite doable.
