Xevious Resurrection ~ PS3 ~ 2009 ~ 1CC

This is a PS3 exclusive Xevious game available on the Namco Museum Essentials compilation. The game includes a few Namco classics as well as this one. Sadly it was only available on the PSN and is now delisted. A modified PS3 and a digital copy of the game are the only way of playing it nowadays.

The game has great graphics (for a Xevious game), a really cool soundtrack and adds a few enemies, as well as a Shield mechanic, which protects only against lasers. You have 3 shield units but destroying any enemy that shoots a laser will provide a powerup that instantly regenerates one unit. The game retains the sol towers which have to first be uncovered with the bomb weapon and boosts your score. To my knowledge the hidden one-ups have been removed, but points will grant you lifes at fixed intervals.

This game has a very interesting option for DualShock 3 users : depending on how hard you press on the button, you can change the autofire rate, from 7.5Hz to 15Hz. I had never seen that in a shooting game before. As I’m using a PS1 joystick via a converter, I did not use this feature though, and I think the rate was therefore locked to 7.5Hz.

The game is surprisingly easy to clear, but as usual with those games, scoring is where the replay value is. There’s none in this replay though :)
