Setting: Hospital Accident and Emergency Department

NURSE - A 40-year-old patient has come to the emergency department with a bum on his/her hand caused by a burning accidentally while ironing. The patient seems to be unsettled and anxious and demands immediate treatment.

TASK
* Collect details about the incident ( how it happened)
* Confirm the presence of blistering (superficial thermal burn).
* Explore measures already taken (cleaning of burn, pain relief, etc.)
* Find out about any signs of shock (dizziness, nausea, fever, etc.)
* Outline next steps (e.g. examination by a doctor, dressing burn, etc.)
* Explain possible treatment for blistering (e.g leave alone, aspiration of fluid, removal of the top layer of skin, etc.). Advise that decision regarding treatment will be made by a doctor.
* Advice on the possibility of scarring (e.g. superficial burns usually heal within 14 days minimal scarring, etc.) Reassure patient about next steps (e.g. priority case, pain relief to be administered, doctor to address concerns, etc).
* Establish the patient's willingness to wait to see a doctor.
