DERBYSHIRE DALES PARISH #3: SUDBURY

Welcome to Sudbury, a small out of the way village located about 9 miles south of Ashbourne. The parish includes the hamlets of Aston, Aston Heath, Dalebrook and Oaks Green

Oaks Green is where you’ll find a prison – that would be HMP Sudbury which is one of many prisons around the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border. It was originally a hospital

Sudbury is synonymous with the name Vernon. The Vernon family came to Sudbury as a result of the 16th century marriage of Sir John Vernon to Ellen Montgomery, the Sudbury heiress.

The Vernons lived at Sudbury Hall, a huge mansion which is easily the most impressive building this channel has seen for quite some time. It was built in the mid 17th century

It was used for filming some scenes in the BBC dramatisation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and its domed cap-house featured in the title shot of the children's TV programme The Book Tower

Now run by the National Trust, the hall is just one of the attractions Sudbury can boast. It also features a courtyard with a café, and a some very unique shops too

Sudbury previously had its own railway station too, but the site of that station is actually in Staffordshire and therefore, not in this video
