Baden is a region in the exterior southwest of the Federal Republic of Germany and beside Württemberg and Hohenzollern one of the three parts of the Bundesland "Baden-Württemberg", which is the third largest of the 16 Bundesländer in Germany (only Bavaria and Niedersachsen are larger). Baden itself has a population of about 4 million inhabitants and an expanse of 15.070 km². It is located along the Rhine River and has borders with France in the west and with Switzerland in the south. The most famous and largest towns are Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Freiburg. The landscape is dominated by the Rhine valley on the one hand, and on the other hand by the mountains of the Schwarzwald (Black Forest; highest mountain Feldberg, 1493 m), in the north rather by the area called Kraichgau and the Odenwald. In the south a part of the Bodensee (Lake Constance) even belongs to Baden. Moreover after an official selection Baden is holding 4 of the 9 very best universities in Germany (Constance, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe).


Its national colours are gold-red-gold, which are reaching back to mediaeval times being the colours of the margraves of Baden. The margravate was founded at the beginning of the 12th century and rested until the end of the Napoleonic Wars, but being divided 1533 in the protestant margravate Baden-Durlach and the catholic margravate Baden-Baden. 1771 it was unified again. Then, in 1806, Napoleon turned it into a grand duchy and it gained many new territories. In 1848/49 Baden was the starting point and the centre of the revolutionary movements fighting for a democratic and liberal republic in Germany. So it was in Rastatt, in the heart of Baden, where the revolutionists lost their last fight against the reactionary forces. The grand duchy Baden existed until the German November Revolution of 1918 immediately after the end of World War I. During the era of Weimar Republic 1918-1933, the first democracy in Germany, also Baden was a democratic republic and got the status of a free state within the German republic. The state existed until 1945, but from 1933 on it had to follow the enforced political conformity of the Nazi regime. After World War II the time of an independent Baden was over. It was consolidated together with Württemberg and Hohenzollern after a referendum, which modus was very disputed and still is today (in fact the majority of the old Baden voted against the fusion). And so Baden is living on in the new, today still existing Bundesland "Baden-Württemberg".


The inofficial national anthem of Baden is called "Badnerlied". The composer of the anthem is unknown, but probably the melody has its roots somewhere in Saxonia and was brought to Baden in the 19th century, where the text was transformed to the today known "Badnerlied". The anthem is very popular and is played very often at celebrations, sport events, parties and both official and inofficial events.
