Drum Leaf Binding Photo Book // Adventures in Bookbinding

Описание к видео Drum Leaf Binding Photo Book // Adventures in Bookbinding

The Drum Leaf binding was developed by Tim Ely (whose name I butcher in the video). It's an adhesive only structure - no sewing - that opens flat and can either make the spine fold an interesting feature, or disappear, depending on what you want to happen. Either way, there is no sewing visible. Once the book block is made it is very similar to the sewn board binding and can be covered in many different ways, many of which I demonstrated in a series of videos about the sewn board binding. I'll use the break-away spine method for this video.

I've been asked about drumming on the cover and pastedown. Ely was influenced by Gary Frost and the sewn-board binding. In the sewn-board binding Frost drums on materials where ever possible. This has some historical precedent and also produces a softer feeling board to the book. It has some aesthetic appeal. It does have cons. Imagine a heavy use library book made this way. The paper would wear on the edges of the boards and eventually split and the whole cover would peel off. And laminated materials are much stronger and stiffer, and this approach doesn't have that. But since this binding is called the drum leaf binding, and this is the way I saw the original inventor demonstrate it, it seemed appropriate to drum everything where possible. Plus, it is really fast!

My main printer is an Epson WF-7840. It's okay. It prints and scan A3 and was cheap. I don't know much about the quality of printers and can't make recommendations.
