What's the Difference Between Panic Attacks and Anxiety Attacks? Ravinder Puri
Panic attacks are officially defined in the DSM-5, a diagnostic manual for mental disorders. It is estimated that approximately one in three individuals will experience at least one panic attack during their lifetime. These episodes are characterized by a sudden onset of intense fear or dread, often likened to the feeling of a balloon popping. There are two distinct types of panic attacks: unexpected panic attacks that seemingly arise without any apparent trigger, and expected panic attacks that occur in response to a specific phobia or fear. For instance, encountering a snake when one has a fear of snakes can potentially trigger a panic attack. Both panic attacks and anxiety attacks share common features such as a sense of fear or discomfort, as well as the activation of the "fight-flight-freeze" response, which leads to physical symptoms like a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, throat tightness, dizziness, nausea, sweating, dry mouth, shaking, and more.
