You've heard about mercury levels in fish, it seemed very far away from our shores. One needs to worry about mercury when you are traveling abroad eating salmon and sushi. But now, there may be a cause for worry right in our fish markets. Reports of formalin, a cancer-inducing chemical used illegally to preserve fish are coming in from various states. The price of fish in states like Assam has jumped after a government ban on importing fish from other states, specially Andhra Pradesh.
