The inaugural football tournament of 24th NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy 2024 was held on September 14 evening at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima under the theme “Goal for Peace”.

Angami Students’ Union (ASU) organizes the tournament annually in honour of student martyrs’ Lt. Kekuojalie Sachü and Lt. Vikhozo Yhoshü.

Altogether 43 teams, including nine from Manipur state have registered for the coveted title. The tournament will go till October 5.

The inaugural match was played between Red Scars FC and Mez & Co.

Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton at the inaugural, expressed gratitude to the Angami Students' Union for organizing the event and highlighted the importance of fostering unity through sports. 

He emphasized that the tournament's theme, "Goal for Peace", symbolizes teamwork and cooperation, not only in football but also in society at large, reflecting the aspirations for peace and progress.

Patton commended the role of youth as ambassadors of peace and unity, encouraging participants to inspire and build lasting connections through their sportsmanship. 

He paid tribute to the martyrs whose sacrifices remind the people of the value of peace and called for unity in the face of challenges.

He also acknowledged the government's commitment, under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, to supporting initiatives that promote peace and development, including investments in sports infrastructure.

He praised Hokato Hotozhe Sema for winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Paralympics, urging participants to compete with passion and fairness.

Patton concluded by expressing optimism about the future of sports in Nagaland, encouraging athletes to contribute to the growing legacy of sporting excellence in the state.

Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) president Medovi Rhi shared the solidarity message while the welcome address was delivered by ASU president Khriesamhalie David Mere.

The inaugural programme was chaired by organizing committee convenor Vizokho Zashümo while ASU games & sports secretary Metebo-o Sote administered the oath to the participating teams.

Earlier, the curtain raiser featured various artists like Vetho, Moko, Mengu, Guru Gee, Tutu, Litsuku, Vidi & Vivo and 15th NAP (IR) Mahila Band.

The prize money for the champions has been enhanced to Rs 3 lakh while the runner-up will receive Rs 1.80 lakh. Semi finalists will get Rs. 40,000 each while quarter-finalists will receive Rs 25,000 each.

Individual awards for best midfielder, defender and top scorer have been set at Rs. 10,000 each. Players of the tournament will be awarded with Rs. 50,000.
