The story of Tibetan settlement: Mainpat Phendeling’s past and future prospects

In this special episode, we traveled to the Central region of India to learn about the only Tibetan settlement in the state of Chhattisgarh. Established in 1962, Mainpat Phedeling is nestled on Mainpat Hill, with a moderate climate and fertile soil. The land was made available by the then state government authority of Madhya Pradesh to accommodate around 1,400 newly arrived Tibetan refugees. While farming was once the primary means of sustenance, villagers have since transitioned to sweater selling and other service sectors. We spoke with some of the early settlers and second generations who worked the land to gain insights into their history and to understand what the future holds for the community.
