Whole Plate, as its name suggests, is a "plate" format from the days of glass and metal negatives that today is largely obsolete because film isn't commonly made for it, but it occasionally becomes available. Shanghai made some in the early 2020s and I managed to buy several boxes and have it stored away in my refrigerator. Being 6½x8½ inches it contact prints nicely onto an 8x10 sheet of paper.

The Fujinon NSW 125mm f8 becomes an ultra-wide lens with FFE of 22mm on whole plate with about 12mm to spare which is a little but not a lot: care is needed with movements to avoid vignetting. With these images I decided to try tilts and swings combined to control focus and depth of field. The Rittreck (like many cameras) tilts from the base of the front standard – often referred to as "base tilt" – which has the secondary effect of moving the lens forward and lowering the lens axis. The forward movement of the lens is obvious on the ground glass and will be corrected when adjusting the focus (which you're doing as you're applying the tilt) but the lowering ion the lens axis – equivalent to applying fall on the front standard – is less obvious and is easily overlooked, which happened here.

I made matters worse when I applied front swing in addition to the front tilt. It needed to be corrected with a little bit of front shift.

The problem could have been seen if I checked for vignetting through the corners of the ground glass: they have a small cut so it's possible but checking them is not part of my normal routine. Clearly a lesson to be learned.

I returned to re-take the photograph, this time taking care to adjust swing, rise and shift and ended up with a much better image.
