William Shakespeare’s Stratford Upon Avon visits some outstanding houses, historic buildings and important places that tell the story of Shakespeare.

William Shakespeare was born and grew up in Stratford Upon Avon, in Warwickshire, England. He is widely considered to be the world’s greatest writer and playwright. Stratford Upon Avon is a beautiful place to visit, the town is very picturesque and steeped in history, there are numerous places to see that are connected to Shakespeare. This film takes you on a tour around the places that tell the Shakespeare story from the cradle to the grave including: the house where Shakespeare was born and grew up; the house where his wife, Anne Hathaway grew up and where Shakespeare courted her and the final resting place of Shakespeare within the chancel of Holy Trinity Church.

History
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 and baptised at the Holy Trinity Church. Shakespeare’s parents were John and Mary, Mary had grown up on her father’s farm in Wilmcote while John Shakespeare was a glove-maker by trade.

William was educated at the local grammar school and would have left school by the age of 15. When William was 18 he married Anne Hathaway, the daughter of a local farmer. Anne grew up in Shottery where Shakespeare courted her. They lived together in a cottage next to his parent’s property. The couple had three children but tragically their son died in 1596.

Shakespeare left Stratford Upon Avon to find work in London in 1585 and became an actor and playwright for one of the capital’s leading theatres. By 1597 Shakespeare had become a wealthy and successful playwright. Shakespeare purchased his own house in Stratford upon Avon, the splendid New Place, where he retired to in 1611. Although the house has long been demolished, the peaceful gardens stir the imagination. Shakespeare died at the age of 52 on the 23 April 1616 and is buried in the nearby Holy Trinity church with his wife and daughter.

Free entry but a small donation can be given to visit Shakespeare’s grave.

There are a number of other places and attractions to visit in Stratford Upon Avon including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre where Shakespeare’s plays are staged.
