The Buffalo National River, in Northern Arkansas, was the first National River to be designated in the United States. The Buffalo River is 153 miles long. The lower 135 miles flow within the boundaries of an area managed by the National Park Service, where the stream is designated the Buffalo National River.
The Buffalo National River, which runs through Newton, Searcy, Marion, and Baxter counties, became the first national river in the United States on March 1, 1972. It is one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the lower forty-eight states.
We floated from Baker Ford to Rush landing a 40 mile trip. It took us 2 nights and 3 days. I would recommend using a tent and not a hammock, as we had a hard time finding places to hang our hammocks on this section.
