Hello Friends welcome to my channel, My name is Akash Prajapati, Today's topic is Serum LDL Cholesterol test (Bad Cholesterol).

The LDL cholesterol test is a type of lipid profile test used to detect heart disease. As its name suggests, it contains lipids (fats) and proteins. Cholesterol is a wax-like substance found in the blood. There are two types of cholesterol in blood, which include cholesterol obtained from food and cholesterol produced by the liver. The liver produces cholesterol which the body needs for various functions. Lipoproteins transport cholesterol from the blood to the cells. This is the primary function of LDL cholesterol.

About half of total body cholesterol is LDL. The cells of the body use the mixed cholesterol for different purposes. When cells get enough cholesterol, they do not take up extra cholesterol. Due to which the excess LDL present in the blood starts accumulating in the inner layers of the blood vessels. Due to which the lumen of the blood vessel becomes narrowed or thinned and blood flow is reduced. That's why LDL is sometimes called 'bad cholesterol'.
It is advisable for adults above twenty years of age to get this test done. This test should be done regularly every four to six years. Increasing levels of LDL do not cause any symptoms. As mentioned, high levels of LDL can cause blockage in the arteries. Therefore, LDL cholesterol test is done as a part of lipid profile to detect the risk of heart diseases. Doctors may recommend this test in the following situations:

Most of the people in the person's family suffer from high cholesterol.
obesity or smoking habit
To find out the effect of medicines being taken for lipid related disorders.
