There are four applications in the Chablis region: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru, and Chablis Grand Cru. All Chablis wine is produced from one grape variety, which is Chardonnay. The first difference between Chablis and Chablis Premier Cru is the soil. The vineyard of Chablis are located or Portmaldian soil which is Chablis 1er Cru is located mostly of Kimmeridgian soil.
The second differences between Chablis & Chablis 1er Cru is the average age of the vines. Generic Chablis is produced from vines 4-6 years old, which is Chablis 1er Cru is produced from 10-12 years old vines.
Some Chablis wines are labelled as vielles vignes. which means that wines was produced from older vines. The average age of generic Chablis wines is between 4-6 years, which average age of Chablis Premier Cru is between 10-12 years.
